Protection zones are about 15 m wide managed areas that are covered with perennial vegetation and are meant to protect ground water and catchment areas. Protection zones cannot be fertilized and usage of herbicides is forbidden. The crop from the protection zone must be harvested minimum once a year or it must be grazed. The harvest can be used as animal feed.
Part of the Mustiala fields are bordered to water systems. Protection zones have been established on the shore areas of Mustialalammi and Kaukjärvi, and next to Riuskanoja.
